Physical therapy's roots lie in medicine. In fact, the first physical therapists were trained by and worked under the direction of medical doctors performing the more physical medicine, such as stretches, joint mobilization, massage and soft tissue mobilization, strengthening, and other exercises. They also used a variety of thermal and electrical modalities, such as hot packs, cold packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, diathermy, etc. They sometimes used various forms of traction.
